Update: This guide may be out of date. Please see the permanent guide at the top of the page for the latest information and discussions.
Not everyone who is going for Insane in the Membrane will be able to do this, but if you’re just starting out, this will help you gain Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation almost three times as fast as any other method.
Grinding this method requires you to start with at least Neutral reputation with Booty Bay. If you’ve already begun going for Insane in the Membrane and you are below Neutral with Booty Bay, you won’t be able to do this, and you should farm your reputation elsewhere. See my Bloodsail Buccaneers guide for complete details.
If you intend to grind Bloodsail to Exalted, be aware that mobs killed in this guide stop giving reputation at 11999/12000 Honored, all the mobs which do grant reputation up to Exalted will be phased out, and getting out of the phase requires getting back to Neutral with Booty Bay. I don’t recommend grinding in this phase if you eventually intend to get Exalted due to the requirement to get the goblins back to Neutral twice, once to get out of the phase and get into Bloodsail Revered, and again after you reach Exalted.
As you’re certainly aware by now, the only way to gain reputation with Bloodsail Buccaneers is to kill the denizens of Booty Bay, wherever they may be. Mostly they’re in Booty Bay, though after the Cataclysm the town’s guards, level 85 Booty Bay Bruisers, have 464,940 health and hit like a freight train, making them difficult to solo for most classes, and impossible for others. (But doing them will be required if you want Bloodsail Exalted as they are the only mobs that grant reputation up to Exalted.)
To get around this you can either kill Booty Bay mobs elsewhere in the world, or you can phase out Booty Bay. The Cataclysm added an epic quest line to Booty Bay which ends with the invasion of the worgen Brashtide pirates. During this event the Booty Bay Bruisers are level 35, hit like wet noodles, and are mostly occupied with fighting the worgen. This makes farming reputation during the event a much easier grind. Note that during the event, all of the mobs in Booty Bay grant reputation except for Booty Bay Bruisers and the two auctioneers.
To get started, pick up the quest Message in a Bottle from a small bottle buried in the sand along the east coast of the Cape of Stranglethorn. This quest will send you to Jaguero Isle for a short quest chain involving Princess Poobah.
(If you have trouble finding the bottle in the sand, try turning on Low Level Quest tracking.)
This starts you on a lengthy quest chain involving infiltrating the Bloodsail Buccaneers; do every quest in the chain until you are eventually sent back to Booty Bay. Once you complete the quest Doublerum, the town will be phased and the invasion event will start. Acquire the followup quest Return to Revilgaz but don’t turn it in yet.
Now, set Booty Bay to “At War” in your reputation pane so that you can kill them. Then kill the Baron and throw his lifeless corpse into the sea! You have just begun farming your Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation.
While farming Booty Bay I prefer to stick to the front central level as the other levels tend to be too much of a maze for too little reputation gained. Using the route I show in this video, I’m getting approximately 5,200 reputation gain per hour (which includes the 10% guild perk). I recommend viewing in HD in fullscreen.
While farming here I recommend killing any Booty Bay Bruisers in your way even though they don’t grant reputation, because like their big brothers they will cast Net to root you, and while their guns hardly hit for any damage, they retain their insane knockback effect.
Also, before you attain Unfriendly with Bloodsail Buccaneers, the worgen invaders will also attack you. It is safe to kill them; you will neither gain nor lose reputation with any faction by killing them.
Be aware if you grind here during the Stranglethorn fishing contest. During the contest, level 71 Booty Bay Elite mobs will be in the area, along with the fishing contest NPCs, and they hit a little harder. Fortunately they give you 25 Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation. Unfortunately they don’t seem to respawn at all.
Once you have gotten Bloodsail Honored, come back to kill Baron Revilgaz and Fleet Master Seahorn one more time for Avast Ye, Admiral! Then it’s time to grind your goblin reputations back up. Once you reach Neutral again, turn in Return to Revilgaz and complete the Brashtide Invasion quests for some extra reputation and to return Booty Bay to its original phase.
I’ve also looked at phased Booty Bay on the 4.3 PTR and it appears to be unchanged. So this is probably not going away anytime soon.
I will also have updated Darkmoon Faire info from the PTR soon!
Oh, and sorry to all the low level Horde players who happened to stumble into my Chain Lightning.
