Farming Bloodsail Buccaneers Reputation Post-Cataclysm

Update: This guide may be out of date. Please see the permanent guide at the top of the page for the latest information and discussions.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm brought significant changes to Azeroth, as anyone who’s played for more than a few minutes has surely noticed. One of the major changes, for people attempting to get the Insane in the Membrane Feat of Strength, is that obtaining the Bloodsail Buccaneers requirement has become much more difficult.

Insane in the Membrane requires, among other things, obtaining Honored reputation with Bloodsail Buccaneers. Before the Cataclysm, the primary way to do this was by killing Booty Bay Bruisers. The Bruisers were relatively weak before compared to now. Today, they have 464,940 health and hit like an asteroid, doing 30,000 damage to plate wearers and one- or two-shotting cloth wearers. This makes them very difficult to kill even for a five-man group; soloing them, as was common before the Cataclysm, is very difficult for most classes.

If you are just starting out and have at least Neutral reputation with Booty Bay, the fastest way to gain reputation through Honored is at the Brashtide Invasion (sometimes called Doublerum) event; it can gain over 5,000 reputation her hour. However it is not for everyone; people below Neutral with Booty Bay will not be able to do it, and people who want Bloodsail Exalted should not do it. I cover this in a separate guide.

For the moment, the only halfway decent way to gain Bloodsail Buccaneers reputation, through 11999/12000 Honored, is to kill Blackwater Raiders pirates at Faldir’s Cove in Arathi Highlands. Horde players can reach it from the new flight point at Galen’s Fall (if you don’t have it, ride southeast from Tarren Mill). For Alliance players, it is a short ride away from Refuge Pointe.

Unlike before Cataclysm, when you pretty much had to know these guys were here, breadcrumb quests at Galen’s Fall and Refuge Pointe send low-level players here for a short quest chain and you will see a lot of low-level player traffic. The final quest in this chain, Death From Below, involves the player and Shakes O’Breen fighting off two waves of invading naga. However, if he is hostile to you, then he will attack you instead of the naga, causing the event to reset and frustrating the poor lowbie. If this happens, move out of his aggro range and wait until the player finishes the event. (Shakes O’Breen normally will ignore you until you attack him.)

Other NPCs giving quests here are Doctor Draxlegauge, Captain Steelgut and Professor Phizzlethorpe. Steelgut and First Mate Nilzlix give 25 reputation when killed, all of the rest of the mobs in this area give 5 reputation when killed. Lolo the Lookout cannot be attacked. At one point, there were Blackwater Deckhand trash mobs in this area which gave 5 reputation, but these were removed in Patch 4.1.0, increasing the time this grind will take.

CinasnarkleThis grind also goes much faster if you’re level 85; I was doing it tonight at level 41, and I am grateful for the help of Cinasnarkle, who’s also working on Insane in the Membrane and helped me get to halfway through Friendly. With Booty Bay not a reasonable option, you’re likely to see many other level 85 players here. Grouping up with them will help speed the grind for everyone. If you’re on a PvP server, though, you may have to fight for control of the area.

If you’re simply going for Insane in the Membrane, you can stop when you reach 0/12000 Honored. But if you’re really nuts and trying to get exalted with Bloodsail Buccaneers, grind these guys all the way to 11999/12000, where you will stop gaining reputation. Then you must go and kill Booty Bay Bruisers, who grant reputation gains all the way through Exalted.

(Yes, I’m really grinding this at level 41. Stay tuned to find out just how low level you can go Insane!)
